Your organic traffic is flat (or down), your impressions are up, and someone in your last leadership meeting asked the question every marketer is dreading: “If nobody clicks anymore, why are we spending money on the website?”
It’s a fair question. According to SparkToro, 68% of U.S. Google searches now end without a single click. But “fewer clicks” and “the website doesn’t matter” are two very different things. In this post, we’ll break down what’s actually happening, why your website matters more than ever (not less), and five things you can do about it this quarter.
What Zero-Click Search Actually Means (and How Big It’s Gotten)
A zero-click search is exactly what it sounds like: the search ends on the results page because Google, or an AI tool, answered the question for you. No click, no visit, no session in GA4.
And it’s growing fast:
- More searches end on Google. SparkToro found that 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60% in 2024. That doesn’t even include the Google mobile app, where the number is likely higher.
- AI Overviews are eating the top spot. An Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found that when an AI Overview appears, the #1 organic result gets 58% fewer clicks. Pew Research saw the same pattern with real users: people clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it didn’t.
- And it’s not just Google. Your buyers are asking ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity for recommendations directly. 6sense research found that 94% of B2B buyers now use AI tools during the buying process.
Ranking #1 used to be the trophy. Now it’s more like a participation ribbon.
Why Your Website Still Matters
Here’s our verdict: zero-click didn’t make your website less important. It changed its job. Here’s why.
- AI has to get its answers from somewhere. AI Overviews and chatbots build their answers from content on the web, and your website is the source of truth for your services, specs, pricing approach, and proof. If your site is thin or outdated, AI will happily fill the gaps with someone else’s version of you. Being part of the answer pays off, too: Seer Interactive found that brands cited in AI Overviews earned 35% higher organic click-through rates and 91% higher paid ad engagement than brands that weren’t.
- The clicks you still get are better clicks. Visitors who come from an AI tool have usually done their homework already. Adobe found that AI-referred traffic converted 42% better than other traffic in March 2026, and several other studies put the lift much higher. To be clear, AI referrals are still a small slice of most sites’ traffic. But it’s a high-quality slice, and it’s growing.
- Buyers still show up to validate. B2B buyers do most of their research before they ever talk to sales, and 6sense found the vendor they favor going in wins about 80% of the time. That one visit to your site is the final exam. Fail it, and you’re off the shortlist.
- Some searches still click (a lot). SparkToro notes that branded, local, and high-intent transactional searches are far less affected than informational ones. Those are exactly the searches that turn into pipeline.
- It’s the one channel you actually own. Google’s results page, AI models, and social algorithms all change on someone else’s schedule. Your website, and the HubSpot data behind it, is yours.
We’re seeing this play out with our own clients. One of our capital equipment clients has seen a significant drop in organic traffic over the past year. In that same stretch, their direct traffic grew by more than 40%, MQLs and SQLs grew by more than 35%, and the rate at which SQLs turned into active opportunities rose by more than 25%. Our read: buyers are finding the brand in AI answers and search results, then coming straight to the website when they’re ready to talk. Fewer clicks, better buyers.
5 Ways to Make Your Website Work in a Zero-Click World
- Write for answers, not just rankings. AI tools love content that gets to the point. Use question-based headings, answer the question in the first sentence or two, and add FAQ sections with schema markup so AI can easily lift (and cite) your content. What to do now: Rewrite the intros on your top 10 service pages so each one answers its main question in two sentences.
- Build the bottom-of-funnel pages buyers (and AI) look for. Pricing (or at least how your pricing works), comparison pages, case studies, specs, and implementation details. These are the pages AI-referred visitors tend to land on, and the pages AI pulls from when a buyer asks, “Who should I hire?” What to do now: List the five questions your sales team hears most and make sure each one has a clear page that answers it.
- Get mentioned beyond your website. AI engines lean heavily on Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, review sites, and trade publications. And each engine has its own favorites: Ahrefs found that 86% of the top-mentioned sources aren’t shared across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews. Your website’s job is to confirm what others are already saying about you. What to do now: Ask five happy customers for a G2 or Google review, and turn one blog post into a LinkedIn post and a short video.
- Make the validation visit count. When a buyer does click, don’t make them hunt. Fast pages, proof above the fold, and clear next steps (HubSpot forms, chat, or meeting links) turn a quick gut check into a real conversation. What to do now: Walk through your site as a buyer coming from ChatGPT. Can you find pricing, proof, and a next step in under a minute?
- Track your AI visibility, and change what you measure. Sessions alone will tell a scary (and misleading) story. Start tracking impressions, AI referral traffic, branded search, and pipeline influenced. If you’re on HubSpot, you have a head start: the AEO tools HubSpot highlighted at UNBOUND, included with Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise, show how often your brand appears in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity answers, how AI describes you, which sources it cites, and where competitors are showing up instead of you. Not on Marketing Hub Pro? HubSpot also sells AEO as a standalone tool for $50 a month. What to do now: Load the prompts your buyers actually ask into HubSpot AEO, create an “AI referrals” segment in GA4 or HubSpot, and add both to your marketing dashboard. Our guide to building a unified marketing dashboard that actually works shows you how.
The Bottom Line
Zero-click changed your website’s job. It didn’t eliminate it. You’ll likely see fewer visitors, but the ones who arrive are closer to buying, and everyone else is reading a summary built partly from your content. Your website went from storefront to closing room: a smaller crowd, but bigger checks.
From Clicks to Credibility
The playbook is simple, even if the work isn’t: be the source AI trusts, show up where your buyers are asking, make the visit count, and measure what actually matters. Do that, and zero-click stops being a threat and starts acting like a filter that sends you better buyers.
